Sythis, Harvest's Hand Enchantress: Why I Retired Zacama

Strategy Deck Tech Commander
Sythis, Harvest's Hand
Sythis, Harvest's Hand · Art by Ryan Yee

My Zacama, Primal Calamity enchantress deck is retired, and Sythis, Harvest's Hand has moved from the 99 to the command zone. Red is gone entirely, 48 of the 100 cards are new, and the draw engine now starts on turn two instead of turn six. The enchantress core that made Zacama work is untouched; what changed is that the deck no longer waits on a nine-mana dinosaur to start winning.

Zacama, Primal Calamity
Sythis, Harvest's Hand

I left the old list up on purpose. The Zacama bracket check I published in August has the full 100 embedded in it, so the two builds can sit side by side, and if you want the wider field, my ranking of enchantress commanders covers the other options. Here is the new list.

Sythis, Harvest's Hand (EDH)

Why Zacama Stopped Winning at Our Table

The record tells it better than I can. Zacama went 7-5 in 2024, 2-6 in 2025, and 0-5 this year. The deck hasn't won since June 2025. Seven straight losses, the latest this week to Mo's egg deck, and my own note on the loss before that reads "I'm in an Elo loss death spiral." I stand by it.

Nothing about the enchantress package failed. The clock did. Zacama costs {6}{R}{G}{W}, which makes her a turn-five play with a good hand and a turn-six play with a normal one, and this pod no longer lets a game get there. The 2026 losses came from a Raggadragga deck going infinite off Kami of Whispered Hopes, an Animar deck comboing with Palinchron and Walking Ballista, and a Najeela deck holding Cyclonic Rift. In 2024 nobody at our table was built to handle a pile of enchantments. By 2026 the table had learned to end the game before the pile mattered.

What Leaves When Red Leaves the Deck

Dropping from Naya to Selesnya costs the deck its whole old way of closing. Aggravated Assault was the tagged win condition, Bear Umbra and Fiery Emancipation made it lethal, and Xenagos, God of Revels, Gisela, Blade of Goldnight and Aurelia, the Warleader were the backup plan. All of them are out, along with Pyrohemia, Cindervines, Boros Charm, Deflecting Palm and the red end of the mana base.

The bigger loss is Zacama herself and her three abilities. {2}{R} to shoot a creature, {2}{G} to kill an artifact or enchantment, {2}{W} for three life. This was the reason the old list got away with six targeted removal spells. Without her, the 99 has to carry its own interaction, and it does: eight tagged removal spells now, with Path to Exile in for Swords, Nature's Claim, Seal of Cleansing and Aura Shards for artifacts and enchantments, and Darksteel Mutation and Kenrith's Transformation next to the returning Song of the Dryads. Plus the first thing resembling a counterspell this deck has ever run.

What the deck gives up in return is its ceiling. The best win in Zacama's history was a twelfth-turn, 42-mana chain of extra combats. Sythis will never do that. She was never supposed to.

Sythis in the Command Zone Rebuilds the Ramp

Sythis costs {G}{W} and reads "Whenever you cast an enchantment spell, you gain 1 life and draw a card." She was already the eighth enchantress effect in the Zacama deck. The count is the same, seven in the 99 plus the commander. One of the eight is now guaranteed on turn two, every game, and that changes what every other card is worth.

Ramp is the clearest example. The Zacama deck accelerated with sorceries: Cultivate, Farseek, Skyshroud Claim, Rishkar's Expertise, none of which an enchantress cares about. All four are gone. Their replacements are one- and two-mana land Auras — Utopia Sprawl, Wild Growth, Wolfwillow Haven and Shimmerwilds Growth alongside the returning Fertile Ground, and with Sythis out, each one is a ramp spell, a cantrip and a point of life on the same card. Ramp and card draw used to be two separate systems in this deck. Now they're one system.

Utopia Sprawl
Wild Growth
Wolfwillow Haven
Shimmerwilds Growth
Enduring Vitality
Gleaming Splendor

Two new pieces go further. Enduring Vitality turns every creature I control into a mana dork of any color, and in this deck that includes every Angel from Sigil of the Empty Throne and every Spirit from Hallowed Haunting. Gleaming Splendor makes a Treasure whenever an opponent draws their second card in a turn, and this pod draws a lot of cards.

The land count drops from 36 to 35, but three mana sources now scale with the enchantment count: Serra's Sanctum carries over, Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx is new, and Crop Rotation finds either one at instant speed. The fourth is Sanctum Weaver, which is why Gauntlets of Light is in the list. The Aura gives the enchanted creature "{2}{W}: Untap this creature," and the Weaver taps for one mana of a single color per enchantment I control. With four enchantments on the battlefield, Sythis, the Weaver and the Gauntlets are three of them. Every untap nets a white mana, and the loop runs as long as I want. That isn't a kill by itself, but Champions from Beyond with an enormous X is a fine place to put unlimited mana.

Nine Tutors and Ten Finishers Instead of One

The Zacama list found things with Academy Rector, Idyllic Tutor and Sterling Grove, and that was it. All three stay, and six join them: Enlightened Tutor, Worldly Tutor, Eladamri's Call, Green Sun's Zenith, Crop Rotation and Tooth and Nail. Nine ways to find a specific card is a different kind of deck. The old build assembled whatever it drew. This one goes and gets what it wants.

It also has more to want. Ten cards carry my finisher tag, in two shapes. The first is token engines that fire off the same enchantment casts that draw my cards: the Sigil makes a 4/4 Angel per cast, Hallowed Haunting makes a Spirit that grows with the enchantment count, and Archon of Sun's Grace adds a 2/2 flier and Ghostly Dancers a 3/1 flier whenever an enchantment enters. The second is one enormous body. Katilda, Dawnhart Martyr // Katilda's Rising Dawn is as big as my Spirit-and-enchantment count and comes back from the graveyard as an Aura that does the same thing to whoever wears it, and All That Glitters runs the same math for a lower price.

Archon of Sun's Grace
Ghostly Dancers
Katilda, Dawnhart Martyr // Katilda's Rising Dawn
Sigil of the Empty Throne
Hallowed Haunting
All That Glitters

Then there's the Tooth and Nail line. With entwine paid ({5}{G}{G} plus {2}), it searches out two creatures and puts them onto the battlefield, and if those two are Bruna, the Fading Light and Gisela, the Broken Blade, they meld at my end step into Brisela, Voice of Nightmares: a 9/10 flying, first-striking, vigilant lifelinker under which my opponents can't cast spells with mana value three or less. In a pod that wins with Walking Ballista and Umbral Mantle, that last clause is the part that matters.

Secret Arcade // Dusty Parlor is the glue. The Arcade half makes every nonland permanent and permanent spell I control an enchantment, so every creature I cast draws a card off Sythis, makes an Angel off the Sigil, and counts toward Katilda, the Weaver and Serra's Sanctum. A third of this deck is enchantments already. The Arcade makes the rest of it enchantments too.

Hate Pieces Aimed at This Pod's Combos

The old list ran zero counterspells and knew it. The new one runs four tagged stax pieces and a bounce spell, and each of them is pointed at something that has actually beaten me.

Linvala, Keeper of Silence
Containment Priest
Stony Silence
Authority of the Consuls
Bilbo's Gambit

Linvala, Keeper of Silence stops my opponents from activating abilities of their creatures. That switches off Selvala, Heart of the Wilds wearing an Umbral Mantle, which was Mo's turn-three infinite in June, and it switches off the Viridian Joiner, Fanatic of Rhonas and Temur Sabertooth lines Adam's Raggadragga deck goes infinite through. Two of the fastest decks in the pod win by tapping creatures.

Containment Priest covers the other half. This pod cheats creatures into play as often as it casts them. Genesis Wave, Protean Hulk, Living Death and Sneak Attack have all beaten me. The Priest exiles anything that arrives without being cast. The catch, and I'll say it before someone at the table does: it also exiles my own Green Sun's Zenith target, both halves of my Tooth and Nail, and anything Bruna tries to bring back. The Priest has flash for a reason. It comes down in response to their spell, not ahead of mine.

Bilbo's Gambit is the closest thing to a counterspell white gets. For two mana it returns a spell to its owner's hand, and if I promise the caster a Treasure, nobody casts anything else this turn. Against a Genesis Wave with the whole table tapped out, that's a full turn bought. Authority of the Consuls and Stony Silence round it out, and the Silence is free to run because this list, like the old one, has zero artifacts. Not even a Sol Ring.

Seven Game Changers Change the Bracket Talk

The Zacama deck ran exactly three Game Changers: Serra's Sanctum, Teferi's Protection and Farewell, which is as many as Bracket 3 allows, and I wrote a whole post about living on that line. This list keeps all three and adds four: Enlightened Tutor, Worldly Tutor, Crop Rotation and Aura Shards. Seven. Bracket 3 stops at three, so this deck has left the room the old one played in.

I haven't minted the audit for the new list yet, so I'm not going to put a bracket number on it here; when the audit exists, I'll link it instead of guessing. If you want to know where your own list lands, the bracket calculator counts your Game Changers against the current list, including the ones that were added while you weren't looking.

That's the honest trade. Zacama could sit at a Bracket 3 table and be the archenemy on a good night. Sythis can't sit at that table at all, and she isn't built to. She's built to keep up with a pod where a turn-three infinite is a normal night.

What the First Ten Games Need to Show

The Sythis build has one recorded outing so far and it's a loss: a 1v1 against Adam's Tifa Lockhart deck that ended on turn three to a 32-power attacker. No enchantress deck beats that draw, and I won't pretend this one would have. What I'm watching is the four-player games. The old post said it plainly, Zacama rarely won before turn eight. If this deck takes a pod game earlier than that this season, the rebuild did its job.

Sythis starts at 1000 deck ELO. Zacama retires at 1048 after 25 games. Both stay on my profile, so the comparison will be recorded rather than remembered, and the deck page will keep the score whether I like the score or not.
