Jace Beleren built a Multiverse without Phyrexians, Eldrazi, or Bolas, and it is bleeding into ours. He calls himself the Theorist now, which tells you most of what you need to know about how this story treats him. The set closes the three-year Metronome arc, and it does it from inside Jace's reconstruction rather than on a battlefield.

What the Echoverse Actually Is

The Echoverse is a copy of the Multiverse with its worst chapters edited out. Wizards' Planeswalker's Guide places the set on an Echoverse version of Arcavios, where Hexhaven Academy stands where Strixhaven should, split into five allied-color schools. Cards native to that reality carry the Echoverse sigil as a watermark, a detail first slipped onto Ral Zarek, Guest Lecturer in Secrets of Strixhaven months before anyone knew what it meant.

Echoed Pairs Come in Every Booster

Every Play Booster and Collector Booster contains an echoed pair: one card from the Multiverse you know, one from Jace's. With a single exception, both halves are the same character living two different lives, and their art forms one continuous panorama. Fifteen of those pairs get borderless treatments, thirty cards in total.

Previews have leaned hard on the Lorwyn 5. Ajani Resolute faces Ajani Unrelenting, Liliana the Repentant faces Liliana the Faultless, and Garruk, Curse Breaker faces Garruk, Veiled Butcher. The gimmick is not planeswalker-only — Tinybones, Pocket Nuisance gets answered by Titanbones, Towering Heart.

Prepared Returns and Exhaust Comes With It

Prepared is back from Secrets of Strixhaven on creature-and-spell double-faced cards: while the creature is prepared you may cast a copy of its spell half, which unprepares it while leaving the body on the battlefield. Exhaust also appears, giving abilities you may activate only once for the rest of the game. That second one is worth reading carefully at a four-player table, where a single-use haymaker has to survive three opponents' worth of removal before it pays.

The Daily Previews So Far

Since August 31, Wizards has shown one card a day, and the six so far are commons and uncommons that hint at how the set plays rather than what it chases. Solitary Cell is a {R} {W} artifact that exiles a cheap permanent and then pays you to discard legendary cards. Generous Revival reanimates a small creature twice thanks to flashback. Cast Away Doubt draws two and pings every player, which is a very different card in a pod than in a duel. Compel Brutality is a bite spell whose second mode lets a planeswalker deal damage equal to its loyalty, a first for superfriends decks. Perfected Theory and Charge the Sanctum round it out as one-mana and hybrid combat tricks.

Preview Season and Release Dates

The set debut lands September 8, prerelease weekend runs September 25 through October 1, Arena gets it September 29, and paper arrives October 2 alongside one four-color Commander deck led by Jace himself.
