The first Standard-legal trip to Middle-earth, built on Adventures, honed swords, and a dragon's hoard. Released August 14, 2026, the main set is a compact one at just under 200 cards in the base frame, and it is the first Tolkien product to enter Standard, where it stays for roughly two years. Its companion set, The Hobbit Eternal, carries the Scene Box cards and the Middle-earth Classic box toppers, and those are Commander, Legacy, and Vintage only.

Five Mechanics, Two of Them Returning

Three mechanics are new. Storied is a static keyword: once you control a storied permanent alongside three artifacts, legendary permanents, or Sagas, you earn an "enduring story" for the rest of the game, and nothing can take it back. Thorin Oakenshield is the showcase, a {R}{W} 3/2 trampler that grants ward {1} to your artifacts and creatures once the story is written. Recruit draws a card, discards a card, and makes a 1/1 Human Soldier if you pitched a nonland card; The Queen of Dale introduces it. Hone counters sit on Equipment and give +1/+0 to whatever is carrying it, which Sting, Bilbo's Sword does to itself.

Adventures return unchanged, with Bilbo, Luckwearer leading the way, and amass is back from Tales of Middle-earth, now building Goblin Armies on cards like Bolg of the North.

What Is in the Boosters

Play Boosters, Collector Boosters, a Bundle, a Draft Night box, and a Gift Bundle that followed on September 4 make up the retail lineup. There are no Commander precons. Instead, two Scene Boxes, Crack the Plates and Treasures of Smaug, each pair three Play Boosters with six borderless foil scene cards that assemble into one panorama.

Collector Boosters hold the chase treatments: Book Cover cards styled as paperback jackets, Dragon Hoard showcase frames, five classic reprints transliterated into Dwarvish script, and the Gleaming Gold Smaug the Magnificent, an English-only headliner printed in roughly 500 copies.

How It Plays in Commander

The legends skew toward Dwarves, Goblins, and Equipment, and storied is nearly free at a Commander table: your commander plus Sol Ring and Arcane Signet already makes three qualifying permanents, so evaluate storied cards on the payoff rather than the condition. Hone counters give Equipment decks their first real reason to run proliferate, since every counter follows the sword to its next bearer. Prices moved fast after release; our two-week price check covers what crashed and what quietly held.
