The Plane of Amonkhet
Amonkhet is set on Amonkhet, a desert plane in Magic: The Gathering inspired by ancient Egyptian mythology. The plane features the lush river valley and protected city of Naktamun, surrounded by a magical barrier called the Hekma. Beyond lies a harsh desert where the Curse of Wandering turns the dead into roaming undead. Five animal-headed gods oversee the Trials that prepare worthy initiates for an honored afterlife under the God-Pharaoh.
The Conflict on Amonkhet
In the story of Amonkhet, the Gatewatch arrives on the plane seeking Nicol Bolas. They discover a society devoted to rigorous training and the Trials of the Five Gods in preparation for the God-Pharaoh’s return. The planeswalkers gradually uncover that Bolas has corrupted the plane and its gods, engineering a population of perfected warriors to serve as his future army of Eternals. Internal doubts grow among some initiates as the truth about their benevolent-seeming world begins to surface.
The Mechanical and Flavor Identity of Amonkhet
Amonkhet evokes ancient Egyptian themes of death, trials, and divine service in Magic: The Gathering. It introduces the Embalm mechanic, creating mummified Zombie token copies of creatures from the graveyard, and Exert, which grants powerful bonuses to attacking creatures at the cost of not untapping next turn. The set also features Aftermath split cards with effects cast from the graveyard and returning Cycling. These mechanics, along with -1/-1 counters and cartouches, capture the flavor of rigorous training, mummification, and preparation for the afterlife.
