The Plane of Amonkhet
Hour of Devastation continues the story on Amonkhet, a desert plane in Magic: The Gathering inspired by ancient Egyptian mythology. The plane features the city of Naktamun, five mighty gods, and the Trials of the Five Gods designed to prepare worthy initiates for service to the God-Pharaoh. Beyond the city walls lies a harsh desert filled with undead horrors and dangerous creatures.
The Conflict on Amonkhet
In the story of Hour of Devastation, the God-Pharaoh Nicol Bolas returns to Amonkhet in person. He reveals his true destructive intent by slaughtering the remaining gods, including Rhonas, Oketra, Kefnet, Bontu, and Hazoret. Bolas unleashes the Dreadhorde and his Eternals upon Naktamun, devastating the city and its people. Planeswalkers such as Gideon, Jace, Chandra, and Nissa witness the fall of the plane as Bolas completes his preparations for larger conquests.
The Mechanical and Flavor Identity of Hour of Devastation
Hour of Devastation embodies destruction and aftermath in Magic: The Gathering. It introduces the Eternalize mechanic, which creates Zombie token copies of creatures from the graveyard, and Afflict, which punishes opponents when their creatures block. The set also features Aftermath split cards with effects that can only be cast from the graveyard. These mechanics, combined with desert themes, zombie hordes, and powerful Bolas-aligned cards, capture the flavor of a plane falling to cataclysmic invasion and divine betrayal.
