The Plane of Innistrad

Innistrad introduces Innistrad, a gothic horror plane in Magic: The Gathering. Humans live in isolated villages and walled cities, constantly threatened by vampires, werewolves, zombies, and malevolent spirits. The archangel Avacyn and her church once protected humanity with holy wards and blessings, but her influence has begun to wane, leaving the mortal population increasingly vulnerable to the creatures of the night.

The Conflict on Innistrad

In the story of Innistrad, the balance between humanity and the monsters is shifting. As Avacyn’s protective magic weakens, werewolves grow more aggressive, vampires expand their domains, and the dead rise in greater numbers. Humans fight desperately to survive, forming militias and clinging to faith, while dark forces gather strength across the plane’s moors, forests, and haunted villages.

The Mechanical and Flavor Identity of Innistrad

Innistrad brings classic horror themes to Magic: The Gathering. It introduces the Transform mechanic through double-faced cards, most notably werewolves that change from human to monstrous forms when the moon is full or conditions are met. The set also features the returning Flashback mechanic and strong tribal themes for Humans, Vampires, Werewolves, Zombies, and Spirits. These elements combine to create an atmosphere of creeping dread, desperate survival, and monstrous transformation.
