The Plane of Kaldheim
Kaldheim is a Norse mythology-inspired plane in Magic: The Gathering featuring ten distinct realms connected by the colossal World Tree. These realms hang like fruits from the branches of the World Tree and float in the Cosmos, a nebulous space between them. The realms constantly shift their positions, occasionally colliding in events known as Doomskars that bring earthquakes, destabilization, and chaos. The plane is home to a warrior culture where inhabitants—humans of various clans, elves, dwarves, giants, and others—value heroic deeds, boast of their victories, and seek glorious deaths in battle. Great tales are preserved as sagas and passed down through generations.
The Conflict on Kaldheim
In the story of the Kaldheim set, planeswalker Kaya arrives on the plane while pursuing a dangerous target. Meanwhile, the planeswalker Tibalt, disguised as the god Valki, manipulates events from behind the scenes. He steals the Sword of the Realms and uses it to sow discord among the gods and mortals, ultimately triggering a catastrophic Doomskar. The collision of realms leads to widespread conflict as different factions and gods clash amid the chaos.
The Mechanical and Flavor Identity of the Kaldheim Set
Kaldheim brings Norse-inspired flavor to Magic: The Gathering through mechanics that evoke Viking sagas and runic magic. The set introduces Foretell, allowing players to exile cards for later casting at a reduced cost, and Boast, an activated ability on creatures triggered after attacking. It also features Sagas, Modal Double-Faced Cards depicting gods, returning Snow lands, and strong tribal themes. These elements combine to capture the epic, mythological identity of the plane and its culture of heroism and conflict.
