The Plane of Lorwyn
Lorwyn introduces Lorwyn, a bright and idyllic plane in Magic: The Gathering bathed in perpetual daylight. The plane is inspired by Celtic and European folklore and populated by eight major folk tribes: kithkin, elves, merfolk, goblins, elementals, faeries, treefolk, and giants. Each tribe lives in harmony with the natural world in a land of endless dawn, rolling hills, ancient forests, and vibrant meadows.
The Conflict on Lorwyn
In the story of Lorwyn, the plane exists in a state of relative peace and timeless day. The various folk tribes pursue their own interests, with occasional rivalries and local struggles. Great champions and storytellers rise among the tribes, while the mysterious Great Aurora looms as a distant but significant force that subtly influences the world and its inhabitants.
The Mechanical and Flavor Identity of Lorwyn
Lorwyn emphasizes tribal identity and folklore in Magic: The Gathering. It introduces the Changeling mechanic, allowing creatures to count as every creature type, and heavily supports tribal synergies through lords and type-specific rewards. The set also features the Clash mechanic and strong focus on creature types such as Kithkin, Elves, Goblins, and Faeries. These mechanics, combined with the plane’s whimsical, storybook aesthetic and vibrant color palette, capture the flavor of an eternal morning filled with mythic creatures and tribal life.
