The Metropolis of New Capenna
Streets of New Capenna is a Magic: The Gathering set that takes players to the gleaming art deco metropolis of New Capenna on the plane of Capenna. Rising high above a desolate wasteland, the city was constructed as a refuge following a cataclysmic war in Old Capenna against a forgotten enemy. Archangels and archdemons forged an unlikely alliance to save its people, with the angels ultimately sacrificing their essence to create Halo—a sacred, viscous substance that powers magic, protects the city, and serves as its most valuable resource. In this towering world of chrome, glass, and steel, the past has faded into legend while residents navigate a stratified society of industry below and opulence above.
Family Rivalries and Power Struggles
The central conflict of Streets of New Capenna revolves around five demon-led crime families that dominate the city's districts and industries while upholding a fragile peace through an unwritten code. Tensions arise as Halo supplies dwindle, prompting territorial disputes and shifting alliances. The families include the Brokers, who traffic in contracts and protection; the Obscura, masters of information and espionage; the Maestros, elite assassins who treat killing as an art; the Riveteers, tough builders and enforcers of the industrial underbelly; and the Cabaretti, flamboyant promoters of entertainment and culture. These rivalries define the streets of New Capenna, where opportunity and danger intertwine.
Mechanical and Flavor Identity
Streets of New Capenna captures its mafia-noir flavor through five three-color families, each with a signature mechanic reflecting their identity in Magic: The Gathering. The Brokers utilize shield counters for defensive resilience, the Obscura connive to manipulate hands and gather intelligence, the Maestros employ casualty by sacrificing creatures for greater effect, the Riveteers unleash blitz for fast aggressive plays, and the Cabaretti trigger alliance effects through creature teamwork. This multicolor design emphasizes faction playstyles amid the set's evocative themes of 1920s-inspired glamour, crime, and hidden celestial power.
