MTG Star Trek Set: Release Date, Spoilers, Mechanics, and Everything We Know

On July 14th, the WeeklyMTG stream gave us our first real look at Magic: The Gathering | Star Trek, the Universes Beyond set timed to celebrate the franchise's 60th anniversary. And after digging through the official reveal and the first wave of spoilers, one thing is clear: Wizards is not treating this like just another crossover.

Set codes: TRK (main set), TRC (Commander), SDS (Stardates bonus sheet)

Tabletop release: November 13, 2026

MTG Arena release: November 10, 2026

Prerelease events: November 6–12

Legality: The main TRK set is legal in all formats — yes, including Standard. The Commander (TRC) and Stardates (SDS) cards are legal in Commander, Legacy, and Vintage.

That last point matters more than it might seem. This is a full Standard-legal Universes Beyond release, which means Kirk and Janeway could be showing up across the table from you at FNM, not just in Commander pods.

The first wave of TRK spoilers leans hard into the captains, and the designs are dripping with flavor.

Captain James T. Kirk (mono-red mythic) is built around the set's modal theme. Whenever he enters or attacks, you choose one of three modes — loot a card, make a 1/1 red Officer token, or pump your team. But here's the Kobayashi Maru twist: if your hand is empty, you choose as many as you want. Kirk doesn't believe in the no-win scenario, and neither does his card. Community consensus on power level is lukewarm — the stats are small and the modes are individually weak — but as a flavor win, it's hard to beat.

Captain Kathryn Janeway (mono-green mythic) got the better deal mechanically. She lets you play an extra land each turn, and whenever she or another creature enters under your control, that creature explores. Yes, explore — the Ixalan mechanic — making a cameo appearance apparently just for her. A self-fueling landfall engine stapled to a legendary body is exactly the kind of card that ends up in a hundred thousand Commander decks. Voyager fans, your captain came to play.

Dr. Beverly Crusher (mono-white mythic) is an Ajani's Pridemate variant that also revives the Doctor creature type. Officer debuts as a brand-new creature type across the set. And the Salt Vampire — deep-cut TOS villain — got a rare, because this set was clearly made by people who have actually watched the shows.

The Lower Decks crowd eats too: Brad Boimler, Eager Ensign and Beckett Mariner, Impetuous Ensign are both in the main set and reportedly synergize with each other in Limited, which is the most Boimler-and-Mariner design decision imaginable.

U.S.S. Enterprise-D, Galaxy-Class confirms that Spacecraft and the station mechanic are back from Edge of Eternities. Charge it to seven counters and it becomes a 4/5 flier with vigilance that exiles the top card of your library and lets you play it. The flagship earned her rare slot.

And like the Doctor Who set before it, iconic episodes appear as Sagas and spells: The City on the Edge of Forever, In the Pale Moonlight, and Amok Time have all been spoiled, alongside flavor-first spells like Set Phasers to . . ., Highly Illogical, and Consider the Prime Directive.

Four mechanics headline the set — two new, two returning:

Assimilate (new) — The Borg's signature keyword action. Assimilating a creature either takes control of it or puts a creature card onto the battlefield under your control, then slaps a +1/+1 counter on it and turns it into a Borg artifact creature, wiping its other creature types. Your Sol Ring's biological and technological distinctiveness will be added to their own.

Face a Dilemma (new) — Triggers whenever a player chooses one or more modes for a spell or ability. The set has a heavy modal theme (see: Kirk), and cards like Seven of Nine reward you every time you make a choice — regardless of what you pick. Stun or kill, you still get paid.

Federation (new ability word) — Cares about the number of creature types among non-Borg creatures you control. It's infinite diversity in infinite combinations as a game mechanic, and the non-Borg clause is a clever double-duty design: flavorful, and it stops changelings from breaking everything.

Spacecraft and Station (returning) — Straight out of Edge of Eternities. Spacecraft enter as artifacts, charge up with station, and eventually become attacking creatures. Expect a lot of ships.

Landfall is also confirmed to appear in the main set, and explore cameos on Janeway.
