Teval, the Balanced Scale Commander Deck: Every Land Is a Zombie

Deck Tech Commander
Teval, the Balanced Scale
Teval, the Balanced Scale · Art by Chris Rahn

Teval, the Balanced Scale makes a 2/2 Zombie Druid whenever one or more cards leave your graveyard. Every time it attacks, it mills three (puts the top three cards of your library into your graveyard) and can return a land from your graveyard to the battlefield tapped.

In this Teval, the Balanced Scale commander deck the graveyard does two jobs. First, lands come back out of it every time he attacks, so each one is a card leaving the yard which creates a Zombie. Then is hasa creature-reanimation package to turn the big mills into bodies. Lands are the engine; reanimation is the backup plan. This is our bracket 3 build.

The deck

The list lives on our house account as Teval — Upgraded. Our bracket audit puts it at bracket 3: legal, no two-card combos, and two Game Changers - Crop Rotation and Field of the Dead.

How it plays

Fill the yard, then play from it

The early turns are about getting lands into the graveyard. Stitcher's Supplier, Satyr Wayfinder, Skull Prophet and Ripples of Undeath mill, and the fetch lands, like Misty Rainforest, Polluted Delta, Verdant Catacombs and Fabled Passage put themselves there without costing you a card.

Then the graveyard becomes your land drop. Ramunap Excavator, Icetill Explorer, Conduit of Worlds and Ancient Greenwarden all let you play lands from your graveyard. A fetch land replayed every turn is the core loop: crack it, it goes back to the yard, play it again next turn, and each replay is a card leaving the graveyard for a fresh Zombie.

That also tells you what Teval should return when it attacks. The land comes back tapped, so nothing is cracking this turn either way, but a returned fetch untaps next turn, cracks for a land, and drops back into the yard ready to be replayed for another Zombie, while a returned dual is just a land. The exception is the turn you're one short of Field of the Dead's seven names: then return whichever land has a new name.

Landfall does the rest

Landfall means "whenever a land enters under your control", and half this deck triggers on it. Tatyova, Benthic Druid draws a card and gains you 1 life, Aesi, Tyrant of Gyre Strait lets you draw a card and gives you an extra land drop, Lotus Cobra adds a mana, and Tireless Tracker makes a Clue. Once you control seven or more lands with different names, Field of the Dead makes a 2/2 Zombie of its own on every land.

Ancient Greenwarden makes all of that trigger twice, because it doubles abilities that trigger off a land entering. Know its limit: Teval's Zombie trigger comes from a card leaving the graveyard, not from a land entering, so Greenwarden doesn't double it.

The big turns

The swing turns come from returning every land at once: Splendid Reclamation, Aftermath Analyst's sacrifice ability, World Shaper dying, and Will of the Sultai. Teval makes only one Zombie for that, because "one or more cards" leave together, but every land is its own landfall trigger, so Tatyova draws a card per land and Field of the Dead makes a Zombie per land.

Sacrificing lands pays you too. The Gitrog Monster draws a card whenever one or more land cards hit your graveyard, so each separate fetch crack or Crop Rotation is a card, while one mill that hits three lands is still one card. Titania, Protector of Argoth makes a 5/3 Elemental whenever a land of yours goes to the graveyard from the battlefield, and Harrow does that at instant speed.

Close the game with Craterhoof Behemoth over a board of Zombies, Avenger of Zendikar with landfall growing its Plants, or Ob Nixilis, the Fallen making a player lose 3 life and growing by three counters on every land.

What we changed, and why

We moved slots from the creature side toward the land engine while keeping a reanimation core - Reanimate, Victimize, Living Death, Meren of Clan Nel Toth, Muldrotha, the Gravetide, The Scarab God and friends all stayed.

Graveyard hate, and how to answer it

Everything here runs through the graveyard, so know which answer goes with which hate piece. Tear Asunder and Assassin's Trophy handle enchantments like Rest in Peace; Putrefy handles artifacts like Grafdigger's Cage; Lethal Scheme handles creature-based hate (and kicked, Tear Asunder does too). When an opponent's Bojuka Bog trigger goes on the stack, respond with an untapped Petrified Field (any land) or Groundskeeper (a basic) to pull a land back to hand. And take the consolation: the exile is cards leaving your graveyard, so Teval still makes a Zombie and Teval's Judgment still triggers.

The Gitrog Monster also makes you sacrifice a land each upkeep or sacrifice it. That's usually a payoff here - the land goes to the yard and Gitrog draws.

Play it, then prove it

Copy the list from the decklist above, tune it, and check where your version lands with the bracket calculator. Then record your games: every result moves the deck's rating immediately, and deck ELO is tracked separately from yours, so you'll see whether the Zombie engine wins in your pod.
