The Hobbit Commander Cards: Sauron, Bombadil & the One Ring

The Hobbit isn't shipping traditional Commander precons — but don't mistake that for a light Commander release. Between the eternal-legal HOC companion set, marquee reprints like The One Ring, and a main set stuffed with cheap, build-around legends, this might be the most Commander-relevant release of the year. Here's everything revealed so far and where we'd start brewing.

HOC is the companion set printed alongside the main expansion. Its cards are legal in Commander, Legacy, and Vintage (not Standard), and they arrive through products like the two Scene Boxes rather than preconstructed decks. Think of it as the set's Commander expansion sheet — new legends and spicy extras riding alongside the main set. You can track it separately on our Hobbit Commander spoiler page.

The Scene Boxes carry a roster of new commanders pulled straight from the story:

• Gandalf, Party Guest — the grumpiest wizard at the unexpected party
• Thorin, King of Durin's Folk and the duo Fíli and Kíli, Joyous
• Mono-color options in Bilbo, Fellow Conspirator and Ori, Plate Stacker
• Smaug the Impenetrable — an alternate, Rakdos take on the dragon

Mono-color and low-complexity commanders at this power level are always welcome for budget and bracket-conscious pods.

The headline reprint is The One Ring, returning as a box topper — every Play Booster box and Collector Booster box includes one traditional foil Middle-earth classic artist card, and the pool also includes Orcish Bowmasters, Rivendell, The Shire, Reprieve, and Flame of Anor. The One Ring and Orcish Bowmasters are two of the most format-defining cards from Tales of Middle-earth, and a fresh printing matters for every Commander player watching their prices — and every table about to face them again.

Two Commander favorites also return outside the main set: Sauron, the Dark Lord, the Grixis Avatar Horror who already helms tens of thousands of decks, and Tom Bombadil, the five-color Saga enthusiast who remains the most chaotic possible seat at a Commander table. Both are reprints of their Tales of Middle-earth cards, so if you missed them the first time, this is your restock.

Every big set shakes up a pod, and this one is aimed squarely at the kitchen table: cheap commanders, long-awaited typal payoffs, Treasure synergies, and an Adventure mechanic that rewards brewers. Expect at least one Thorin deck and one Smaug deck at your table by September — and a fresh scramble up the standings once the new decks start landing.
