The Hobbit MTG Release Date, Products & Collector Guide

Magic: The Gathering | The Hobbit is the game's return trip to Middle-earth — and unlike Tales of Middle-earth, this one is fully Standard-legal, making it the first Tolkien set playable across every competitive format. Here's your complete guide to when it releases, what products are coming, and which collector treatments are worth chasing.

Spoiler season officially kicked off at MagicCon Amsterdam, and daily previews run through the rest of July, with an early in-person look at Gen Con on July 30. Tolkien sets historically pack prerelease seats fast, so if you want to crack packs the week before release, register with your local game store early.

The Hobbit (set code HOB) is a Universes Beyond expansion adapting J.R.R. Tolkien's novel — Bilbo's journey from the Shire through Mirkwood to the Lonely Mountain, with the Adventure mechanic returning from Throne of Eldraine to tell multi-part story beats on single cards. A companion set of eternal-legal cards (set code HOC) ships alongside it; we break those down in our Hobbit Commander cards guide.

The standard lineup is all here: Play Boosters for drafting and deckbuilding, Collector Boosters for premium treatments, and a Bundle with full-art seasonal lands and accessories. A Draft Night kit — a self-contained four-player draft box — rounds out the entry points.

Here's the big product twist: there are no traditional Commander precons for The Hobbit. Instead, Wizards is shipping two Scene Boxes — "Crack the Plates" (the dwarves wrecking Bilbo's dinnerware) and "Treasures of Smaug" (Bilbo's confrontation in the dragon's hoard). Each contains three Play Boosters plus six borderless, eternal-legal cards that piece together into a displayable panoramic scene, along with six art-only versions and an easel for showing the full scene off.

If you mainly buy precons, plan accordingly — the Commander-facing cards for this release arrive through Scene Boxes and boosters rather than ready-to-play decks.

A Gift Bundle follows on September 4, 2026 — three weeks after launch — packing nine Play Boosters, a Collector Booster, seasonal lands, and an oversized spindown. It's the only product containing the surge foil seasonal Hobbit lands, which makes it a holiday-season pickup more than a launch-day one.

The Hobbit is stacked with some of the most distinctive treatments Universes Beyond has done:

• Gleaming Gold Smaug — an ultra-premium gold version of Smaug the Magnificent limited to approximately 500 copies, exclusive to Collector Boosters. This is the set's white whale.
• Book Cover treatment — cards framed as classic Tolkien paperback covers, complete with title styling. The Arkenstone's version is already a fan favorite.
• Dwarvish Language cards — classic Magic cards transliterated into Tolkien's dwarven script, including Arcane Signet, Dwarven Warriors, and Mox Amber.
• Dragon hoard frame — a treasure-themed showcase frame befitting the dragon's vault, showcased on Smaug himself.
• Borderless Scene cards — the panorama pieces from the Scene Boxes.
• Full-art seasonal basic lands — basics depicting the Shire across the seasons, plus Middle-earth Journey lands along Bilbo's road. Last time we got Tolkien's maps; this time it's the road itself.
• Box toppers — every Play Booster box and Collector Booster box includes one traditional foil Middle-earth classic artist card, with reprints like The One Ring and Orcish Bowmasters in the pool.

The Hobbit releases August 14, 2026, with prereleases August 7–13, an Arena launch on August 11, and a Gift Bundle following September 4. It's the first Standard-legal Tolkien set, there are no traditional Commander precons — Scene Boxes take their place — and the chase list runs from the ~500-copy Gleaming Gold Smaug to Book Cover frames and Dwarvish Language cards.
